Pupil Voice 2025

This is an opportunity for pupils to get together with our SEMH Lead and Youth Mentor and discuss issues that have been arising in the school. Pupils here at
SPRS are valued and listened to. This is their chance to have a say on things that happen here and also to challenge and debate how things can be changed.
The topics can vary between uniform, lunch options and PE themes. One member of each tutor group is selected to represent the views of that set of pupils. They are asked to bring different points to the meeting that can discussed in a mature and respectful manner. Our next Pupil Voice meeting will be held after half term, date TBC.

Metal Detecting on Entry:

Students said they wanted to stop metal detecting on entrance. We had a discussion as to why this occurs and the students did conclude that a risk assessment would show metal detecting is an appropriate action.

Sand

Students wanted more sand to play with while they worked. They were pleased to know that more sand is on order.

Lunchtime

One student stated they would like to be able to go home for lunch.

Students said they want to be left alone at lunchtime. Teachers should eat in the staffroom. One student says staff try and interact with her at lunchtime and she just wants to be left alone. It was explained that lunch time is stil lesson time when we are developing social skills but staff would not force pupils to engage with them at lunch time.

The Building

Students said the building looks really tired and they want some new colours and paint on the wall. Some suggestions were blue, green, grey, white and black. They said the ceiling needs cleaning too. The building usually gets a new layer of paint in the summer. We are also waiting for our new cleaner/caretaker to start.

Hair

The girls said that hair dye should be allowed in school. This was a rule that they could find no explanation for. No one has ever been distracted by colourful hair. It was explained that this is not a rule in PRS but when transitioning back to mainstream school they will not be allowed coloured hair.

Nails

The girls said they should be able to wear long nails. Again we discussed the potential health and safety implications and they understand why this rule is in place.

Eyelashes

The girls also spoke about having eyelashes they wish to wear. Mrs Atkinson explained that part of the PRU rules are to reflect those in mainstream to ease with transition but there is no current rule in place to prevent the wearing of false eye lashes.

Sensory space

The students said they would like bean bags instead of chairs in the space. They would also like the Yoga balls to sit and rock on.

They would like some sort of screen so they can watch YouTube videos in there.

It was discussed about a time limit. Some said there shouldn’t be a time limit but you can be checked on after ten minutes. Do not ask questions or communicate other than saying “I am just checking you are OK”, as questions create demand which could stop deregulation.

No more than two people in there at once.

One student suggested a bell to communicate they are ready to come out

Toilet

The boy’s downstairs toilet has a lock which keeps jamming meaning you are stuck in the loo. If someone hasn’t escorted you, no one knows, and it can be scary. This has been mended.

Lessons to be more challenging

We couldn’t answer this subject as the students present didn’t want lessons to be more challenging. However, one of the key school priorities is challenge and staff are receiving training around this theme.

Pupil Voice 2022

In September we had a Drop down Day in which we focused on Pupil Voice. We looked at what was important to pupils within the school and during the school day.

The pupils were encouraged to discuss different areas that affect them such as:

As you can see from the results there were some great points raised.
